Beauty Sleep

Hey guys,

I’ve been kind of sick this week and have spent a lot of time being pitiful in bed. So, this week’s post if going to be pretty short and to the point: GET YOUR BEAUTY SLEEP. More importantly, get off of your phones and computers before you go to sleep. 

We’ve all been there: You get into bed at 10 o’clock, proud of yourself for finally going to bed early. You think to yourself “I’ll just check Facebook really quick.”Someone posted a funny Youtube video so you think you’ll watch that then close your laptop. Then suddenly it’s 4 in the morning and you’re watching rhythmic gymnastics ball throwing routines (you’re welcome for that link, by the way). How did it happen, though?!

There are a lot of reasons why we shouldn’t be on our electronic devices before sleep. But the one I want to focus on is that the light of your electronics actually messes with the chemicals in your brain. Studies have shown that this light suppresses the release of melatonin–the lovely chemical that makes you sleepy. Playing games, texting, and browsing the web can also put your brain into “flight or fight” mode, meaning even if you do get a full night’s sleep you’re body doesn’t really rest.

So this week, try cutting out electronics up to an hour before bedtime. Try reading a book instead. Maybe even make a deal with yourself that you’ll cut laptop and cell phone use from your bedroom. At least try it for one night and let me know if you guys got the best sleep ever, because I know I did.
